saturday night and the moon is out

Tucked away off the road in Bon Temps, there's a road house. Warm light spills from its windows, and the sound of a jukebox playing drifts out into the muggy Louisiana night. The regular assortment of trucks and Hail-Mary-please-keep-this-lemon-goin'-just-a-little-longer cars sit in the dirt parking lot; what amounts to about half the town's small population... or, at least, of those of the 'drinking age and above' persuasion.

Inside, it's a bar of the type scattered all across the American South: homey, no-nonsense. Booths and tables. A man in a plaid flannel shirt wiping the bar; a crossdresser in the kitchen singing Gospel hymns and rolling his hips in time with the words just to scandalize the prep cook. A handful of waitresses, bustling about.

Sookie makes her way briskly through it all, a tray balanced on her palm and her eyes kept stubbornly front, as voices swarm around her. Aloud, and... less so.

...I’m just going to have one beer tonight Jesus one beer that’s all...

...better not gripe about me eating fries not after what I did for him last night...

...I cannot wait to get the hell out of this podunk town...

 

 "Well, make sure you do, and before it’s too late," she responds, thoughtless, to the young man. "Because every year you wait? You just get more and more stuck here. Believe me, I know."

He stares at her. So do his parents.

So does the other table. And she realizes, too little too late, that he hadn't said that out loud, not at all. She laughs, uncomfortable. "I’ll get y'all some ketchup," she says, brightly, and flees, ponytail swinging against the nape of her neck as she goes.

Stupid, Sookie, she chides herself. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

He drapes his arm over her waist and scoots closer. "I'm glad. That it's not too bad, I mean."

Butter wouldn't melt in his mouth as he adds, "I could kiss it all better."

It takes a second, but then her face floods with embarrassed color. "Sam."

He leans in and kisses her cheek, then lies back on the blanket and coaxes her to come back into his arms and let him hold her again. "Shh. Only if you want."

She curls into his arms without hesitation, still blushing furiously.

"What do you want?"

He takes the question seriously, pressing a kiss to her hair as he thinks for a second.

"Mostly I just want to spend time with you," he says, softly. "Like this, I mean, but also in general. But I don't - there's not, I don't have, like, things that, um, I want to do necessarily when we're together? I figure we can figure out what works for us."

She slips her arm over his bare stomach, tracing her fingers along his skin, her head pillowed on his shoulder.

"I don't even know enough yet to say what I might like or not," she murmurs. "But I'd like to figure it out with you."

He curls his arm around her, running his fingers into her hair and brushing them lightly over the nape of her neck.

"I'd like that too."

It feels so nice just to lie here with him, the leaf-dappled light fluttering over her bare legs and his jeans and stomach, feeling him breathe, listening to the low, comforting rumble of his voice in his chest.

"I want to spend time with you, too," she murmurs. "As much as I can. Like this, and however else I can."

Sam hugs her a little closer. "Your boss is going to get sick of seeing me at his bar," he teases. "Because if you'll let me, I'll stick pretty close."

"He can get sick of it if he wants," she says, amused. "'Cause I hope you do."

And not just because there might be a hungry vampire hanging around, or because of the Rats. Because of this, the flutter she gets in her stomach when he smiles at her, the way she can't stop looking at him. "Though I hope it won't just be for protection."

Sam threads his fingers deeper into her hair and tugs her head back a little so that he can kiss her, slow and lingering.

"Not just," he whispers, warm against her mouth.

A little thrill runs through her, first at the kiss and again at his low whisper.

"Good," she murmurs, her eyes dark, and leans up to kiss him again.

His hand tightens in her hair as he returns the kiss with more intensity than before.

She makes a small sound and pushes herself up to kiss him more deeply, her fingers carding through his hair, her leg slipping over his. "Sam," she murmurs.

"Sookie," he answers, just as soft, and kisses her again. "You're so sweet."

"So are you."

Sweeter by far than she'd ever thought even possible, if she's being honest. She trails her fingers down from his hair and along his throat to his shoulder, then deliberately runs her hand down over his chest, stroking her palm all the way over the firm muscle and soft skin of his belly to his waistband before she brings her hand back up again and lightly swipes her thumb over one flat nipple.

A shiver runs through him at the feel of her petting him, before he gasps at the flick of her finger, arching a little bit in instinctive response.

She likes the way he shivers and she likes that abrupt gasp and the way he pushes up into her touch even more. Leaning over him, she kisses him sweetly and circles the pad of her thumb around his nipple to coax more sensation through him.

He groans against her mouth and runs his hands along her back, down to her hips, flexing his fingers against her there as he returns her kisses.

His groan runs through her like chain lightning. Emboldened by her small success, she copies what he'd done earlier and begins pressing kisses down the line of his throat, over the rise of his collarbone, and down along his chest.

"Sookie," he whispers, hoarse and raw with the sudden surge of want that rushes through him. He strokes his hands back up along her body, over her shoulders, just to touch.

"Yes, honey," she murmurs, and kisses his nipple, then opens her mouth to set her tongue gently on it, the way he had with her. She draws lightly up on his skin with her lips as her free hand tracks along his ribs, a little awkward and uncertain but relaxing as she experiments to see what he likes best.

Her delicate kisses, her gentle exploration, the way she touches him, all of it combines to set him on fire. Sam's head falls back against the blanket as his neck arches, as he catches his breath again and lets himself lose himself to her.

"That feels so good," he whispers, just in case she can't tell. "Don't stop, please don't stop."

"I won't," she promises, and lowers her head to swirl her tongue delicately around his stiffening nipple. Her hand slides down over his side, over his belly, toward the waistband of the jeans he'd put back on, and she only hesitates a second before running her palm lightly down over the straining zipper, feeling him hard and warm beneath the denim.

This time the sound he makes is deep and low in his chest. Sam strokes one hand down her back again and cups the nape of her neck with the other, petting the side of her throat with his thumb to encourage her without restraining her in any way.
